Homeowner Spotlight: Meet Kevin & Avis

For more than 20 years, Kevin and Avis planned to retire in Texas. When the pair retired in the Washington DC area, they decided to make two major moves – the first was to Texas. The second was to build their dream home with Drees.

Kevin and Avis sat down with us and shared highlights from their home building experience.

What floor plan did you choose, and what attracted you to this design?

We chose the Elmsley primarily because of the utility and functionality of its spaces. We were attracted to the room sizes, layout, design and spaciousness of the house.

As you have watched your home’s design come to life, what have been your favorite spaces and features?

Our favorites were the family room because of the openness and proximity to the kitchen. We also love our owner’s suite, as it was carefully designed with tall ceilings, beams and a bay window with a seating area. We enjoy the proximity to the patio, walk-in closets and the shower configuration in our bathroom.

The kitchen in another favorite space in the home. We enjoyed selecting the cabinets, backsplash and countertops, and we love having an oversized pantry and prep area. The KitchenAid appliances were also a huge bonus.

What did you enjoy most about the building process?

It was nice to know that throughout the building process we would be provided realistic timelines. We were kept in the loop, and the Construction Manager was open and transparent with us about updates on our site.

What advice would you give others who are interested in building a home?

I would recommend purchasing a semi-custom home and taking the time to plan the structural/electrical details before selecting a design. Consider certain upgrades, manage expectations and prioritize your must-have items.

We relied heavily on the weekly updates provided by our Construction Manager to stay in the know. It’s important to be flexible with the construction timelines. In that vein, we’d recommend not visiting the site weekly. Instead, conduct monthly visits so that real progress can be seen.

Why did you choose to build with Drees?

We chose Drees because their reputation precedes them. They build quality products, stand behind their work, pay attention to detail, don’t try to up-sell, and provide honesty, integrity and genuine concerns in ensuring the customer gets exactly what they requested.
