Episode 9: Creating the Perfect Hangout for the Holidays

Hi there! Welcome to the “Ask Alexa” series. I’m Alexa Drees, the Design Center Director at Drees Homes, and I’m excited to bring you weekly tips, advice, and answers to your dilemmas to help make designing your dream home an easy and enjoyable process. Each week, I’ll be rolling out a new feature. (If you missed our first eight videos, you can watch them here.)

In our inaugural month, we kicked off the series with a discussion on all things backsplash. In November, we took a deeper dive into the kitchen, going beyond the backsplash and suggesting other ways you can create major “WOW” factor. We also tackled lovely lighting selections for the home and reviewed all the options when it comes to accent ceilings and statement walls. Most recently, we talked about the biggest buzz word in home design: shiplap.

As we head into the holiday season, we’re excited to discuss all of the features of a home that set the foundation for not only a beautiful holiday, but a meaningful one full of fond memories with family and friends. This time of the year, families are focused on spending quality time together, and our collection of floor plans and array of options provide the perfect palette to make this happen.

Mixing Fun & Functionality

More than ever before, families who build with us are putting emphasis on media and game rooms. As it gets colder outside, having a space in the home that lends itself to a comfortable place to hang out together is a staple.

In the past, people looked towards a finished basement as their main family time space solution. Now, we have more options than ever. Imagine a second floor loft or game room as the perfect place for a teenage retreat. Or is an extra media room extension what sparks your interest? There are now so many design options to consider when crafting a home to fit your family’s lifestyle.

Designing with Family Time in Mind

When deciding how to incorporate fun into the floor plan, the underlining motive always comes back to designing for your family. For example, we see a spectrum of requests from home theaters for streaming Netflix  to bar areas with billiards to bonus rooms stacked with games.
